James R Smith was a painter in watercolour who lived at Watford in Hertfordshire.  During World War II he served as a Lieutenant in the R.A.F. and in 1945 painted a number of views of the disused R.A.F. camp at Heaton Park, Manchester sketched while a battery of the 69th Sl Regiment was stationed on the gun site in the Park.  These pictures are now in the collection of the Imperial War Museum.
