The Reverend Robert Hassell Newell was born in Essex in 1778. He was educated at Colchester and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he was admitted Fellow in 1800. He was Dean from 1809 to 1813 when he became Rector of Little Hormead, Hertfordshire.
He studied under W.H. Pyne and illustrated his own publications which included "Letters on the Scenery of North Wales" in 1821 and "The Zoology of the English Poets" in 1845.
Examples of work by The Reverend Newell are in the British Museum and the Hertford Museum.
His son, Charles A. Newell was also an artist.
