Samuel John Lamorna Birch studied at the Academy Colarossi in Paris in 1895.  He settled in Lamorna Cove in Cornwall, initially at Boleigh Farm and later at Flagstaff Cottage Lamorna.  At the suggestion of the artist Stanhope-Forbes “He adopted the sobriquet ‘Lamorna’ to his name to distinguish himself from Lional Birch, an artist who was also working in the area.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1893 and was elected an Associate in 1926 and a full Member in 1934.  He exhibited prolifically at the Fine Art Society where he had one-man shows.  the Royal Watercolour Society, Walkers Gallery, the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and elsewhere.  In 1937 he painted in New Zealand.  The Tate Gallery holds his work and Falmouth Art Gallery gave him a retrospective in 1997 which toured to Plymouth.  An exhibition at Penlee House in Penzance in 1995 had marked publication by Sansom & Company  of Austin Wormleighton’s “A Painter’s Laureate: Lamorna Birch and his Circle”.  Work by Samuel John Lamorna Birch is also held in the collections of the following Museums and Art Galleries - Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum; Harris Museum and Art Gallery; Russell Cotes Art Gallery and Museum; Lancaster City Museum; Lancaster Maritime Museum; Oldham Gallery; Sheffield Museum; Penlee House Gallery and Museum; Bristol Museum and Art Gallery; Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens; National Trust Lanhydrock; Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery; Birmingham Museums Trust; Dundee Art Galleries and Museums; Beverley Art Gallery; Royal Watercolour Society ; Derby Museum and Art Gallery; Potteries Museum and Art Gallery; Manchester Art Gallery; Royal Cornwall Museum; Dorset Museum; Touchstones Rochdale; Brighton and Hove Museums; NorthLincolnshire Museum; Williamson Art Gallery and Museum; McLean Museums and Art Gallery; The Whitworth Museum; Museums Collection Dundee; Lang Art Gallery; Paisley Art Institute Collection; Mansion House Cardiff; Ulster Museum; TateGallery; Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums; The Box, Plymouth; National Museum Cardiff; Grundy Art Gallery; Bury Museum; Newport Museum and Art Galleries and the Royal Academy of Arts
